Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) News announced ealier this month that the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) will soon issue a 50-peso commemorative banknote overprint of Saint Pedro Calungsod for public circulation.
CBCPNews added, the banknote commemorates the recent canonization of the second Filipino saint last October 2012. Calungsod is a teenage Catholic missionary who died a martyr in Guam more than three centuries ago.
Henrietta T. De Villa, secretary general of the National Commission on the Canonization of Calungsod, said that the commemorative banknotes will help promote Calungsod and are expected to be out for public circulation before April this year. She has no idea yet as to how many copies will be made, yet according to an earlier report from gmanews, 10 million pieces are set to be printed.
“Because of the many signatures needed, certainly I think these will be released not later than the feast day of Calungsod on April 2,” De Villa said. BSP’s Monetary Board has also approved to issue commemorative medals to honor the sainthood of Calungsod.
Way back in 1987, Philippines had also issued a commemorative overprint for San Lorenzo Ruiz’s (PH’s 1st Filipino saint) canonization. This was printed on the 5 peso banknote.
