The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) presented on Wednesday, January 14, the limited edition coins, commemorating Pope Francis’ visit to the Philippines.
BSP is releasing two versions of the Papal visit coins, a 50-piso and a 500-piso coins. The P50 coin is made of nickel brass and will be sold at 100php, while the P500 coin, made of Nordic Gold with gold plating, is priced at 1,000php. Both coins are legal tender and minted under a licensing agreement with the Vatican.
The coins feature on the obverse the portrait of Pope Francis, “Republika ng Pilipinas”, “Pope Francis”, signature of Pope Francis, mintmark, and the denomination, while the markings “Papal Visit/Philippines”, the BSP seal, the papal visit date January 15-19, 2015, papal visit logo, and the mini letters “mercy and compassion” on the reverse.
According to BSP, “The 50-Piso and 500-Piso coins will be available beginning the last week of January 2015. 1,000-Piso silver and 10,000-Piso gold Papal commemorative coins will also be available in May 2015“.
The 1,000-peso coin will be made of 92.5 percent sterling silver, while the 10,000-peso, 91.6 percent gold.
