BSP releases commemorative coins for Pope Francis visit

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) presented on Wednesday, January 14, the limited edition coins, commemorating Pope Francis’ visit to the Philippines.

BSP is releasing two versions of the Papal visit coins, a 50-piso and a 500-piso coins. The P50 coin is  made of nickel brass and will be sold at 100php, while the P500 coin, made of Nordic Gold with gold plating, is priced at 1,000php. Both coins are legal tender and minted under a licensing agreement with the Vatican.

The coins feature on the obverse the portrait of Pope Francis, “Republika ng Pilipinas”, “Pope Francis”, signature of Pope Francis, mintmark, and the denomination, while the markings “Papal Visit/Philippines”, the BSP seal, the papal visit date January 15-19, 2015, papal visit logo, and the mini letters “mercy and compassion” on the reverse.

According to BSP, “The 50-Piso and 500-Piso coins will be available beginning the last week of January 2015. 1,000-Piso silver and 10,000-Piso gold Papal commemorative coins will also be available in May 2015“.

The 1,000-peso coin will be made of 92.5 percent sterling silver, while the 10,000-peso, 91.6 percent gold.

For those interested in purchasing the coins, downloadable reservation forms are available at the BSP’s website (www.bsp.gov.ph) and just send them to papalcoins@bsp.gov.ph, where BSP will send the payment details and when the coins can be picked up from the BSP. BSP also issued commemorative coins during the Papal visits in 1970 of Pope Paul VI, and of Pope John Paul II on 1981 and 1995.

  5. I made my reservation last jan 30. I received a confirmation the following day. I am still waiting for the notice when pick up the coins.
    Has anyone received already a notice for pick up? Thanks.

  8. Pwede na pong magreserba ng commemorative coins online. Eto po ang link http://papalcoins.bsp.gov.ph/. Sa La Union Regional Office po, wala pa raw available sa lahat ng denomination. Sa La Union kasi ko pipick-up-in yung order ko. Yung pong 1,000 at 10,000 denomination, mga mid-2015 po yata ang release date.

  9. I reserved 2 50-peso coins and 1 500-peso coin however the confirmation email for the papal coins are for the 50-peso coins only. I don’t know if I can still claim the 500-peso coin. 😦
